The Competitive Edge Starts at Ground Level
PART 1: Why Your Young Athlete’s Feet May Be Coaching Their Performance More Than Any Agility Drill
Movement never lies.
The body always wins.
The only question is…what is it adapting to?
If you haven’t read Chapter 1: The Competitive Edge No One’s Talking About, I’d encourage you to start there. It lays the foundation for everything we’re going to build together in this series.
Every weekend across Tampa Bay, parents pack coolers, unfold lawn chairs, and spend hours cheering for the people they love most.
They celebrate the home run.
The game-winning goal.
The personal record.
The buzzer-beater.
They watch the scoreboard.
They watch the statistics.
They watch who won.
Here’s what I find fascinating.
Almost nobody watches how their child got there.
Not the first step.
Not the way their foot met the ground before they exploded into a sprint.
Not the way they absorbed force before changing direction.
Not the tiny movement that happened before everything else.
And yet…
Those tiny moments may tell us more about an athlete’s future than the final score ever could.
Every week in my Tampa Bay corrective posture therapy studio, I work with young athletes from baseball, softball, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, dance, gymnastics, golf, and track and field.
The sport changes.
The body doesn’t.
No matter what uniform they’re wearing, movement leaves clues.
You just have to know where to look.
A Question Worth Asking
Here’s something I’ve genuinely wondered for years.
Why is it completely normal to inspect the foundation before buying a house…
…but almost unheard of to inspect the foundation before building an athlete?
Now let me ask you another question.
Imagine your contractor called and said,
“We found a problem with the foundation, but don’t worry…let’s go ahead and remodel the kitchen anyway.”
Would you do it?
Of course not.
Because every improvement you make to that house depends on the foundation underneath it.
The kitchen matters.
The roof matters.
The windows matter.
But if the foundation isn’t doing its job, eventually everything above it has to compensate.
Athletes are no different.
Every season we ask them to become a little stronger.
A little faster.
A little quicker.
A little more explosive.
Every season, we’re adding another floor to the house.
But every new floor asks a little more from the foundation beneath it.
That’s why I spend so much time looking at feet.
Not because they’re the whole story.
Because they’re where the story begins.
About a year ago, a ten-year-old track athlete walked into my studio, and my breath caught in my throat.
Her mom had told me on the phone…. She was fast.
Really fast.
The kind of athlete coaches love because she looked naturally gifted.
She walked in smiling, but I instantly spotted a big problem!
She was excited to show me how quickly she could run.
If you watched her race, you probably would have assumed everything underneath the hood was working exactly as it should.
She won races.
She trained hard.
She loved to compete.
Then I asked her to perform one simple movement.
She couldn’t.
The look on her face said it all.
She was genuinely surprised.
So were her parents.
Her feet collapsed.
Her knees drifted inward.
Her pelvis sat in a posterior tilt, leaving the muscles along the back of her body constantly stretched and working from a disadvantage.
Even her shoulders had already begun adapting to everything happening below them.
Most people saw a fast athlete.
Movement told a different story.
Movement never lies.
Parents often ask me,
“So…did she just need stronger feet?”
That’s a fair question.
But it isn’t where we started.
Before we could build strength, we had to make sure her feet and ankles could actually do the jobs they were designed to do.
There’s a huge difference.
Because the body doesn’t care what we hope it will do.
It responds to what we repeatedly ask it to do.
If the foot can’t move the way it was designed to…
The body adapts.
If the ankle can’t move…
The body adapts.
If the knee has to rotate because the foot couldn’t…
The body adapts.
The body is incredibly loyal.
It will always find another way to accomplish the task.
That’s one of the things that makes athletes so remarkable.
They find a way.
The question isn’t whether they’re finding a way.
The question is…
What is that strategy costing them?
Sometimes what looks like athleticism…
…is really an incredible compensation.
And compensations can perform at a very high level.
Until they can’t.
Here’s Something I Find Fascinating
Parents spend thousands of dollars every year helping their children become better athletes.
Private coaches.
Strength coaches.
Speed coaches.
Agility classes.
Travel teams.
None of those things are bad.
Many of them are excellent.
But can I challenge an assumption?
What if practice isn’t the biggest influence on how your child moves?
What if it’s everything that happens between practices?
Think about it.
If your child practices baseball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, or football for six hours each week…
What is their body practicing during the other 162 hours?
Walking through school.
Standing in line for lunch.
Sitting in class.
Riding in the car.
Doing homework.
Looking down at a phone.
GAMING!
The body doesn’t know the difference between “practice” and “life.”
It simply practices whatever we ask it to practice most often.
That’s why movement quality isn’t built only during practice.
It’s built during thousands of ordinary moments nobody is paying attention to.
Every Step Counts
Most parents think their child’s most important shoes are their cleats.
Or their basketball shoes.
Or their running shoes.
Ironically…
Those probably aren’t the shoes influencing movement the most.
It’s the pair they wear to school.
The shoes they wear walking through the hallways.
Standing around with friends.
Walking through Target.
Going out to dinner.
Those shoes experience thousands upon thousands of steps every single week.
Modern footwear has done an incredible job of making life more comfortable.
That’s a good thing.
But comfort sometimes changes behavior.
Many everyday shoes have toe boxes that are narrower than the natural shape of the foot.
Some have thick, cushioned soles that may reduce how much the foot senses and responds to the ground beneath it.
Others position the heel slightly higher than the front of the shoe.
None of those design choices automatically create movement problems.
They’re simply worth paying attention to.
Because every design encourages certain movements…
…and discourages others.
Now layer modern life on top of that.
Our kids spend hours every day sitting.
At school.
In the car.
Doing homework.
Looking at a screen.
Their bodies are constantly adapting to a world that keeps them slightly folded forward.
If their everyday shoes also position the heel just a little higher than the forefoot, that design may reinforce a posture their bodies are already practicing.
That doesn’t make the shoe “bad.”
In fact, for some kids it probably feels incredibly comfortable.
But comfortable isn’t always the same thing as functional.
Most of us think the foot simply lands…and pushes off again.
In reality, it’s doing something much more remarkable.
It accepts force.
It adapts.
It gently rolls through each step, preparing the rest of the leg to move.
It’s a beautifully choreographed conversation with the ground.
When that conversation happens well, movement often looks effortless.
When it doesn’t, the body doesn’t stop moving.
It simply changes the conversation.
The body doesn’t care what we hope it will do.
It responds to what we repeatedly ask it to do.
One step at a time.
One day at a time.
Until repetition quietly becomes habit.
And habit becomes movement.
So if movement really does leave clues…
