A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how muscles tell bones what to do.
Today, let’s take that conversation one step further.
If muscles tell bones what to do, who tells the muscles what to do?
The answer is your nervous system.
Now before anyone with a neuroscience degree starts twitching, yes, we know nerves are far more complicated than what we’re about to describe. The nervous system is incredibly complex. But sometimes the simplest explanations are the easiest to understand.
So let’s pretend your nerves are garden hoses.
Stay with me.
Your Nerves Are Like Garden Hoses
Imagine a garden hose with water flowing through it.
As long as the hose is open and unobstructed, water flows smoothly from one end to the other.
Now imagine someone steps on the hose.
The water doesn’t necessarily stop completely.
It just doesn’t flow as well.
Maybe some water gets through. Maybe the pressure changes. Maybe the flow becomes inconsistent.
For the purpose of understanding how nerves can behave, think of the water as the signals traveling through your nervous system.
Again, this is an oversimplification, but it creates a useful visual.
When a nerve becomes compressed or irritated, the signaling between the brain and the muscle may not occur as efficiently as it should.
That can sometimes contribute to symptoms like:
- Tingling
- Numbness
- Burning sensations
- Itching
- Muscle twitching
- Muscle spasms
- Nighttime leg cramps
Many people experience these symptoms long before they ever think they have a nerve-related issue.
The symptoms come and go.
Some days they’re there.
Some days they’re not.
Because they’re inconsistent, they’re easy to ignore.
Weak Muscles And Poorly Instructed Muscles Are Not The Same Thing
This is an important distinction.
Most people assume a muscle is either strong or weak.
But muscles also depend on receiving clear instructions.
Think of it like using a GPS that keeps cutting in and out.
The problem isn’t your car.
The problem is the signal.
Your muscles rely on a constant stream of information from your nervous system.
When those signals become inconsistent, the muscle may not perform the way it’s supposed to.
That doesn’t automatically mean the muscle is weak.
Sometimes it means the communication isn’t as clear as it should be.
Your Nervous System Is The Highway
Another easy visual:
Think of your spinal cord as a major interstate highway.
From that highway, nerves branch out like side roads to different muscles and tissues throughout the body.
Those nerves carry information in both directions.
Some signals tell muscles what to do.
Other signals bring information back to the brain about what’s happening throughout the body.
When traffic is flowing normally, everything works smoothly.
When traffic gets backed up, delayed, or disrupted, things can become less predictable.
Again, this isn’t a perfect scientific explanation.
It’s simply a way to visualize how important healthy nerve communication is to normal movement.
Why Does My Calf Wait Until I’m Sleeping To Start A Fight?
Let’s talk about the question we hear all the time.
Why do leg cramps always seem to happen in the middle of the night?
You’re sleeping peacefully.
Everything is fine.
Then suddenly your calf decides it’s training for the Olympics.
You launch out of bed, grab your leg, and begin questioning every life decision you’ve ever made.
First, let’s acknowledge that dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, certain medications, and low potassium levels can absolutely contribute to muscle cramps.
Those are real possibilities.
But if you’ve been drinking water, eating reasonably well, and these cramps have been showing up repeatedly for months or even years, it may be worth asking a different question.
Could there be an issue with how the nerve is communicating with the muscle?
One possible explanation we see clinically is that when nerve signaling becomes inconsistent—too little signal at one moment and too much at another—the muscle can struggle to regulate its normal contract-relax cycle.
The result can be a muscle that suddenly tightens when it shouldn’t.
Many people never consider this possibility because they only focus on the cramp itself.
But at Professor Posture, we’re always interested in what happened before the symptom showed up.
The “Kinked Hose” Theory
We commonly see people with movement patterns that place repeated stress on certain areas of the body.
Over time, that stress can contribute to irritation or compression around nerves.
Common examples include conditions such as:
- Sciatica
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
Remember our garden hose analogy.
If the hose gets pinched, the flow becomes less efficient.
Then imagine that pressure changes or the obstruction briefly eases.
Suddenly more flow gets through.
Again, this is not exactly how nerves work, but it can help explain why symptoms often feel inconsistent.
Some people experience tingling.
Others experience numbness.
Others experience burning sensations.
And some experience muscle cramps or spasms.
The important takeaway is that symptoms are often the final result of a process that may have been developing for a long time.
Stop Chasing The Symptom
This is where many people get stuck.
The cramp happens.
So they stretch.
The tingling happens.
So they shake their hand.
The tightness happens.
So they massage the area.
There’s nothing wrong with any of those things.
They may provide temporary relief.
But they don’t necessarily explain why the symptom keeps returning.

Our goal is to understand why the body felt the need to create that symptom in the first place.
Because recurring symptoms usually have a story behind them.
What We See In The Studio
One of the things we frequently hear from clients is that longstanding nighttime cramps become less frequent—or disappear entirely—as movement patterns improve and nerve irritation decreases.
Interestingly, some people will temporarily experience a cramp while performing corrective exercises.
Using our hose analogy, it’s almost as if we’re temporarily helping restore flow through an area that hasn’t been communicating efficiently.
The good news is that as movement improves, many people find those nighttime wake-up calls become far less common.
The Bottom Line
Muscles don’t make decisions by themselves.
Nerves tell muscles what to do.
When nerve communication becomes less efficient, the body may respond with symptoms such as tingling, numbness, itching, burning, twitching, tightness, or muscle cramps.
Does every muscle cramp come from a nerve issue?
Absolutely not.
But if you’re dealing with recurring symptoms that keep returning despite your best efforts, it may be time to stop asking, “How do I make this symptom go away?”
And start asking:
“What is causing this symptom to show up in the first place?”
Because when we improve movement, improve communication, and improve function, the body often becomes much quieter.
